Why You Should Use CSS

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

It seems more and more webmasters are using CSS for the design and layout of their sites rather than depending on tables and HTML mark up. As well as being more efficient in terms of page size and reusing CSS templates many webmasters believe that it also contributes towards search engine friendliness.

Jacob over at Blogging Pro has written an article based on his personal experiences and points out what he believes to make a better more search engine friendly site.

For a long time I have always loved using tables for site layout, but the general consensus is now that tables are bad for layout. I agree once you start nesting tables things start to get complicated and messy. All of this extra HTML in your page gets in the way of the real content that the search engines are after. If you separate design from content the search engines can just crawl the content and ignore the design.

Separating content from design also means that pages are much easier to update, rather than having to rewrite every page all you need do is alter the stylesheet. This saves you no end of time and saves you no end of bandwidth, the browser only has to pull down the stylesheet once if you use it for all of your pages. Not only have you saved on bandwidth costs but you have speeded up page loading, this is good for both your visitors and the many bots that crawl your site.

I have started to use CSS in more of my sites and I am going to use CSS solely on my next site which means learning about how CSS is used for layout. One of the sites that I have found useful is the Web Design Group where they have a guide to cascading style sheets. The site also includes lots of links to other CSS resources.

If you are not using CSS it would be well worth your time learning the CSS tags and their properties. Think of it as a future investment, the time you spend now will pay for itself in better search engine ranking, saved bandwidth and you will cut down on your maintenance and development time for your new sites.

Effective or Irritating : The Use of Pop Windows in Internet Marketing

Friday, August 29th, 2008

A few years ago, pop-up windows were all the rage in Internet marketing. What is a pop-up window? It’s a window that suddenly pops up when the visitor clicks on a hot linked graphic or hyper linked text. Pop up windows are often smaller than the existing browser window and display on top of the existing page the visitor is viewing.

It seemed that every time one opened a web page they would be bombarded with offers for this or that. It had gotten to the point where surfing the Internet was almost like playing a video game; when the ads would pop-up one would try and close them out before another one came. This is precisely why we have seen the decline in the use of pop-up windows on the Internet today;

Internet surfers simply do not even look at the pop-ups anymore. They close the windows out before even reading the ad. Very often, a surfer will even leave your site if there are too many pop-up ads. They do not want the hassle of closing those windows while trying to obtain the information that your site has to offer. This information, while valuable, is not as valuable as the surfers’ time. However studies have shown that even with these set backs, pop-up windows are still an effective method of Internet marketing.

Is there some way that pop-up windows can be less irritating and still be effective? Yes!!! What if the pop ad were seen upon exiting your site instead of entering? This would allow the surfer to obtain the information that they need from your site, feeling that they were able to come and go quickly without being hassled by other ads and offers all the while making the surfer happy.

You have left the surfer with a positive attitude and therefore are more likely to respond to the pop advertisement. This is being accomplished more and more by using what is being called pop-under windows.

When the surfer comes to your site, the ad is opened discretely behind the your web page. Then, upon leaving your site, after obtaining all the information that they need, will see the ad and therefore be more likely to respond. Since the surfer has the information, he has achieved his objective and is now open to do other things; ideally respond to the pop under advertisement.

Not all pop-windows are created equally. There are some things that you can do to make your pop-windows, whether pop-up or pop-under more effective. The pop-window should be easy to “escape” from. If the surfer does not want to see the ad, but has a hard time closing it out, they will likely become frustrated and could leave your site all together.

You can either use a button to that will allow the surfer to close the window or be sure that the “x” is easily visible. Another good idea is to use a script that utilizes cookies. Cookies will prevent pop-windows from overloading the surfer since you can decide the frequency of the pop-windows, rather than each time a page is opened. Also be sure that there is no more than one pop-window per page.

When creating a pop-window, you will be asked to fill out a short information form, select the length of cookies, and choose the layout of the pop-window. When choosing the design of the pop-window, you can increase the effectiveness by creating a large headline that includes benefits that will be most appealing to the customer. You should also consider using incentives and lastly do not ask the customer to read a long and drawn out advertisement. Keep the message simple yet powerful and your pop-ads will be sure to generate profits for your site.

Evaluating Bandwidth Choices-OC3 vs OC12 vs OC48

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Looking for bandwidth? That can be a daunting and frustrating task even in the best of situations. There’s lots to consider in order to make the right decision for your needs. Below you’ll find some help when evaluating OC3 vs OC12 vs OC48. Factors covered include Technology, Speed, Description, Application, Pros, Cons, and Cost.

~~~~~~~~~
Technology: OC3
Speed: 155.52 Mbps
Description: Optical carrier (fiber) connected by equipment capable of speeds up to 155.52 Mbps.
Application: Large enterprise or ISP backbone.
Pros: Extremely high speed and throughput.
Cons: Extremely high cost.
Costs: Expect cost of an OC3 to start at around a $10-30,000 for a stable, reliable system (e.g. from a Tier 1 provider)…..not including local loop or extensive setup. However….the pricing for these connections can vary widely depending on the carrier, location of service and the application for which the connection is being used. For example…Tier 1 providers may cost more than local/regional Tier 2 and Tier 3 providers but are much more stable and reliable. A Tier 1 provider should always be the provider of choice for any business serious about the quality of their OCx network.
~~~~~~~~~~

Technology: OC12

Speed: 622.08 Mbps

Description: Optical carrier (fiber) connected by equipment capable of speeds up to 622.08 Mbps.

Application: Large enterprise or ISP backbone.

Pros: Extremely high speed and throughput.

Cons: Extremely high cost.

Costs: Expect cost of an OC12 to start at around $1-300,000+ for a stable, reliable system (e.g. from a Tier 1 provider)….. plus several hundred thousand dollars in setup costs. However….the pricing for these connections can vary widely depending on the carrier, location of service and the application for which the connection is being used. A Tier 1 provider should always be the provider of choice for any business serious about the quality of their OCx network.

~~~~~~~~~~
Technology: OC48
Speed: 2.488 Gbps (Gigabytes per second)
Description: Optical carrier (multiple strands of fiber) connected by equipment capable of speeds up to 2.488 Mbps.
Application: Large enterprise or ISP backbone.
Pros: Extremely high speed and throughput.
Cons: Extremely high cost.
Costs: Expect cost of an OC48 to start at around $3-500,000 for a stable, reliable system (e.g. from a Tier 1 provider)….. plus several hundred thousand dollars in setup costs. However….the pricing for these connections can vary widely depending on the carrier, location of service and the application for which the connection is being used. A Tier 1 provider should always be the provider of choice for any business serious about the quality of their OCx network.
The Sector for Gaming Laptops Has Become a Saturated One
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008
In my point of view gaming notebooks have lost their once held specialist status. I remember when they were not so available. They were tiny volume sellers and big profit making items. They were the kind of laptop computers wanted by lots of people but the expense was just too prohibitive. Had you been a power user they were simply the best laptops you could buy. Gaming notebooks would get everyone excited in regard to what’s to become standard in a few years but I don’t believe they would buy laptops like this whilst be wary that the price is going to slip fast. Things look set to change though because now the gaming portables sector has caught the attention of bigger manufacturers.
Just imagine how much revenue these big brands could be generating particularly when using production levels. With such thin profits on other laptops its no surprise they would like to be included here. Small companies are unable compete with them in convincing potential purchasers to buy laptops. I am trying to think what the the reaction from littler system builders will be. I am already noticing some price drops. With the money at their disposal they could easily get rid of littler competition. Additionally society just appear to trust bigger companies more.
The manufacturers latest laptop computers are receiving a lot of accolades as being the best laptops from the media. This contains the potential to be very promising for local companies. I reckon people that purchase these types of laptops like to be able to spec up their laptop. Normally this kind of customer is well versed in the tech specs and can easily compare configurations. If comparing specs and design, these purchasers generally pick the former.
All the changes are extremely beneficial from the customers view. This will act to make the newest technology greatly accessible for the consumer. I say that with a high degree of uncertainty however. New technology introductions should prolong premium prices. Multinational manufacturers have involved themselves with the laptops for gaming niche and only time will tell what the outcome is.
Scope out http://www.rizeon.com as they are providing some pretty fast laptop computers for the money.
Simple Tips for Good Health
Monday, August 25th, 2008
Many people take for granted very simple ways to healthy living and eating. Our foods are full of toxins, chemicals and preservatives so when you eat try to think natural which is the best way to know your eating right.
If we go back thousands of years when man had no supermarkets and no packaged goods but just simple food then we can relate that to how we should be eating in the 21st century. Back then man would eat food straight from the fruit trees, vegetables that have no chemicals in the soil and free of pesticide spray. Men and women would have been much healthier as they would have also had to work heard to gather their food and we all know that exercise is a vital part of healthy living.
Instead of buying your vegetables from the supermarket which are usually full of chemicals and pesticides consider taking a visit to your small local fresh fruit & vegetable store. Not all of these small fresh fruit & vegetable stores are are that much better as many of them still buy their stock from the same growers as the supermarket chains. The best way to judge if the produce is free from toxins & chemicals is to take it in your hand and take a look at the produce. Study the leafs in greens, do they have a look of been nearly perfect and pest free? If the leaves looks like they have had some harmless insects nibbling at the leaves then thats a good sign the produce has not been sprayed. Do the tomatoes looks pale and without blemishes? If so they have been grown in a hothouse artificially. You are the best judge, use your own discretion and ask the shop keeper directly if the produce is organic and free of sprays & chemicals.
You can also find particular sections in supermarkets & fresh fruit & vegetable stores that cater especially for organic foods which is probably one of the best guarantees that the food is free of toxins. You can also find fresh fruit & vegetable stores that only sell organic foods which is usually the best places to buy.
Eggs are another food source we all need but can be unhealthy to eat due to the chickens been bred in cages and they get no exercise and the eggs contain traces of chemicals from the artificially produced eggs. The eggs also have less natural vitamins, minerals and proteins so we don’t get the full benefits of what natural eggs would normally contain. To be assured your eggs are going to be good for you then buy farm range eggs that are organically grown.
How many of us buy white sugar or use white sugar when buying a drink from a café? Most likely over 80% of us… Instead of having white sugar which is very bad for our health when too much of it is consumed, buy raw sugar which is less refined or even better use honey to sweeten your drinks and food. Honey is a very healthy food but make sure you buy it unfiltered and honey that has not gone through any processing or heating. The best place to buy honey is straight from the owners of bee hives. If you do have to buy your honey from a store then look for a dark natural color with traces of honey comb and read the label.
Another over consumed everyday food source is salt, apparently most people eat 2 sacks of salt a year more than they need. That is an awful lot of slat but its in nearly every packaged food and nearly all foods from your local restaurant, cafés or fast food outlet. Aways insist on salt free food when buying from these places and most restaurant & cafés will be happy to prepare a special dish free of alt for you although at a slightly higher price but it’s well worth it. We all need some salt but not so much, only use natural sea salt or kelp in our meals and do so moderately.
The Colour of Poker Suits
Friday, August 22nd, 2008
Does the color of the suits in poker (pokern to the Germans) make a person tend to play them more? It could be with a dark suit, like spades or clubs a person may take more of a risk. In online poker, the color of the suits displayed differently depending on the computer or the software installed.
The red suits, diamonds and hearts, may tend to make people be a bit more cautious. However, there are those that may just like a particular suit and that gives them a sense of luck. Red or black suits can be one’s good luck charm or maybe for them a curse.
Yet there are those that may feel that playing one color or the other is not because of that color, but because of the cards, they were dealt. In these cases, the only curse or good luck charm for them could be winning or loosing that hand. For them color of the suits won’t matter for playing that poker hand.
It is better to be not play based on just the color of the suits. Only play by color of the suits because of a flush involved can be dire to your poker hand. It is better to play based on your cards and the playing of others than the color of your suit at that time.
Dating Strategies That Work For All Ages
Tuesday, August 19th, 2008
Dating strategies are sought out by every single person on this planet.
While some people dating might seem to know it all, underneath they are searching for what steps they can take to make their dating life more fruitful.
And other daters, who are more lonely, are ardently seeking dating strategies that can help them meet their soul mates.
When it comes to the need for dating strategies, no age group is spared.
In the past most single individuals relied on match makers, friends, and family introductions.
But with today’s fast paced, and sometimes isolated lifestyles, single people need to develop dating strategies that will help them meet someone on their own.
Here are some of the dating strategies that I have seen work for long time daters. While they are not guaranteed, I have seen many single people get married after using these dating strategies.
1. Constant networking. Networking is not just a business strategy, it’s also a dating strategy.
Your soul mate might be friends with the new acquaintance you just met while taking a writing course.
2. Attend single events. While single events might ring up bad memories for some, you at least now that everyone there is looking to meet someone.
3. Get busy. The busier your life is the more opportunities you will have to interact with people. You never know where you will meet that special person.
4. Develop a hobby. Pick a hobby that you really enjoy and throw yourself into it. Chances are you will find like minded people who share the same love for the hobby. One of these people might be your soul mate.
5. Always stay positive. Yes, that’s my favorite dating strategy. People want to be around positive people. Keep a positive attitude and you will attract more people into your life.
5 Things You Must Know Before Buying a Radar Jammer
Sunday, August 17th, 2008
Today we are driving faster cars; as a result, more and more people are relying on radar jammers to evade police. While the reasons for owning a jammer are obvious, what to look for before buying one may not be.
1- If you are contemplating the purchase of an active radar jammer for your vehicle, you should know that they are illegal and have been banned by the federal government since December of 1977. The FCC has banned the use and the sale of these devices and the consequences for repeatedly and willfully using them can be steep. Per the FCC, you could be fined as much as $11,000 per violation (with a maximum amount of $75,000) and you could be sent to jail.
2- This is a good time to think about the debate of whether a passive jammer for radar detectors actually works or not. While passive and active jammers themselves send signals back to a police radar detector and can jam up the signal that it receives, a passive jammer needs to be very close to accomplish this. For example, a police detector can be upwards of 1,000 feet away from your vehicle and accurately measure how fast you are driving. While your passive radar jammer can scramble that signal, it would need to be about 100 feet away to work. An active jammer does the job better and does not need to be as close as a passive jammer, but is the one what is illegal to own. Keep this in mind when looking for a radar jammer to purchase.
3- It’s best to check with your state about if a passive radar jammer is legal where you live. If it is, you may want to check which models and manufacturers are acceptable and which are not.
4- Now, that being said, if you are going to purchase a radar jammer anyway, its best to know where to mount it to obtain the best possible results from it. Mount it where you can see it, without taking your eyes off the road. This will ensure that you are aware of any threat that it may pick up and can react accordingly. The unit also needs to placed where it gets the best “view” of the road and of incoming signals as well. The best place to mount the radar jammer is on the dash above the steering wheel. Placing it here will ensure that you have constant view of the unit and that it has a constant view of the road.
5- Radar Jammers can be purchased through online dealers. Because of the legality issues involved with owning and operating them, they can be expensive. Most models run around $1,500.00 each, this is for an active jammer as opposed to a less expensive, less dependable passive jammer.
John Mancini writes about radar detectors online and offline. You can read more about radar detector reviews and radar jammers on his websites.
